When people think of the W.O.A - Wacken Open Air festival, they naturally think of loud loud music, tons of lights and an explosion of heavy metal mayhem. After all, the festival sells all 80,000 ticket as soon as it’s announced every year, and with multiple stages, various lifestyle areas and a marketplace, it’s not difficult to figure out why. But perhaps the biggest star of the festival, an element both metal and non-metal fans alike can relate to, are the people who go every year. The tribe. The people of Wacken.
We The People Of Wacken is a photographic journey through the Wacken tribe, courtesy of award-winning photographer and film maker Pep Bonet. Bonet’s unique experience in capturing all aspects of humanity, from Haiti to Johannesburg South Africa to Sierra Leone AND on tour with Motörhead (to name a few) made him the perfect choice to capture the lifeblood of the Wacken experience. 180 pages of rich black and white images will bring people into the tribe that is Wacken’s audience. No-one other than members of the audience tribe are shown. Accompanied by an essay by writer and rock journalist Steffan Chirazi, this soft-back publication will also be accompanied by a double-disc set of songs from the 2013 festival. It will be released in June 2014, with an exhibition of photography from Bonet (some not seen in the book) to be installed at W.O.A. 2014.
It is rare to see a world documentarian of Bonet’s stature and focus train their attentions on a festival community, but Bonet is skilled enough in seeing the common threads which exist between tribes the world over, whatever their conditions, wherever their location. It is the juxtapose of that eye with the unbridled abandon of a Wacken audience which makes this book compelling to all eyes for all people of all tastes.
"I genuinely did not expect to find such community, camaraderie, warmth and togetherness at Wacken. The people, although very obviously all different and colourful in their own unique ways, felt like one mass on the same very positive trip together. It was pretty overwhelming for me, I found myself very much caught up in this world, to the point where I lost track of time in the best possible way. I think the only word you could use to accurately describe these people is 'tribe'." (Pep Bonet, 2014)
